The Beginner’s Guide to Specialty Coffee (No Snobbery Allowed)

If you’ve ever felt intimidated walking into a specialty coffee shop, we get it. The menu reads like a wine list, the barista seems to speak a different language, and you just want a good cup of coffee without a lecture. Here’s our no-judgment guide to navigating the world of specialty coffee.

What Makes Coffee “Specialty”?

Specialty coffee scores 80 or above on a 100-point scale graded by certified tasters (called Q Graders). It’s the top 5-10% of all coffee produced globally. But what does that actually mean for your taste buds? It means the coffee has distinct, clean flavors — you might taste notes of chocolate, citrus, berries, or even florals, instead of just “coffee flavor.”

The Most Common Drinks, Decoded

Espresso — A concentrated shot of coffee. Intense, complex, and the base for most drinks on our menu. Think of it as coffee in its purest form.

Americano — Espresso + hot water. If you like black coffee but want something with more depth than drip, start here.

Latte — Espresso + steamed milk. The crowd-pleaser. Smooth, creamy, and endlessly customizable. Our Miss Belle (Spanish latte with oat milk) lives in this category.

Cappuccino — Like a latte but with more foam and less milk. Stronger coffee flavor, textural contrast.

Pour Over — Coffee brewed by hand, one cup at a time. Takes longer but highlights the unique character of single-origin beans.

How to Order Like a Regular

Here’s a secret: the best baristas love questions. Don’t know what you want? Tell us what you usually drink, whether you like sweet or bitter, and we’ll find your perfect match. There’s no wrong order at BRWTL — unless you put ketchup in it. Then we need to talk.
